The Newspaper is Dead

Newspapers are making headlines lately, and it's not for their news. They are laying off workers. A ton of them.

Newspapers are loosing revenue, fast.

They are loosing money, they are loosing subscribers. Their new subscribers (the new blood) just isn't there anymore.

The average newspaper reader is 55 years old. And they are not getting much younger. It's been predicted that the last newspaper will be printed in 2043.

Why the newspaper is dying?

  1. No one reads. Why read when you can watch a youtube video right? The young generation, generation Y, and the milliniums aren't readers, we're scanners, and skimmers.
  2. Craigslist is king. More and more advertisers are going on craigslist to post their listings now instead of the newspapers. These classifieds are the newspaper's bread and butter.
  3. Blogs are the new thing. Self-published blogs are IN, and politico journalism are fading. A lot of these ex-employees of the major newspapers are starting up their own blogs, etc. Now every voice has a niche.
  4. Popularity of online newspapers. Online newspapers like the HuffingtonPost are hugely popular and is gaining traction.
  5. The content is king. Now with new technology like RSS, people can get the content delivered in any platform they wish. When people can get their news through their iPhones, it doesn't leave much room for the conglomerates.

What does that mean for the future?

In the future, everyone's a star. Everyone's a publisher. (at least those who choose to be)

The internet is fast. It is cheap, and it is free.
